Bahrain Protest Mark February 14 Anniversary With Return to Pearl Roundabout [PHOTO SLIDESHOW]

One year ago today, Bahrainis gathered in Pearl Roundabout, located in the capital Manama, for a month-long protest. The protestors at the giant white monument, were attempting to recreate the impact of the movement at Egypt's Tahrir Square.

For days the protest camp grew, until the authorities evicted the protesters and demolished the monument and have not let protesters return. This has made the location and now-demolished monument potent symbols of the would-be revolution, and on the one-year anniversary of the start of the uprising, Bahraini protesters are trying to return to Pearl Roundabout, which is being guarded by riot police.

Here are a few images from this morning that have been posted to Twitter, mostly via activist Maryam Alkhawaja of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights.

Al Wefaq, the Bahraini opposition political party, posted this picture to its Twitter feed Tuesday morning, of tear gas that riot police set off next to a school playground, in an cat-and-mouse attempt to keep protesters from returning to Pearl Roundabout. Tear gas—often fired at close range and in excessive amounts, and sometimes lethal—is the government's main weapon against protesters.

This Twitter user wrote, using the Arabic name for Pearl Roundabout: "Youth continue their peaceful march to Lulu despite being attacked and some arrests."

The hacktivist collective Anonymous took down a few websites and released some data from US companies that have worked with the Bahraini regime.

Youth gather in Sanabis to try to return to Pearl Roundabout. Riot police tried to stop protesters from leaving Shia areas like Sanabis, Bani Jamri, and Sitra, but many made it to downtown Manama to try to reclaim the square. The island of Sitra, which has a number of rebellious Shia villages, was completely blocked, according to reports on Twitter.
