The Easter holiday is far more of a shoppers' weekend than many might think. It coincides with spring sales and seasonal turnover for retailers, but it can be a big spending holiday, from the candy to the Easter apparel purchases.

The National Retail Federation estimated that consumers were expected to spend a record amount for 2017—about $18.4 billion—from its annual Easter survey, which was released last month.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the NRF survey concluded that the top Easter purchase was candy, which accounted for almost 89 percent of planned purchases. Food ranked second with 87 percent of expected purchases and gifts for loved ones with about 61 percent. Most of the gift shopping was expected to take place in either discount stores or department stores – which is where a handy in-store or flash sale could really come in handy.
