Google Inc. is closing some engineering offices and laying off 100 recruiters, according to a blog post of the internet giant on Wednesday.

Given the state of the economy, we recognized that we needed fewer people focused on hiring, said Google's vice president Laszlo Bock on the blog.

The engineering offices that will shut were announced separately. The offices are the ones in Austin, Texas, Trondheim, Norway and Lulea, Sweden. This move affects 70 workers.

Google employs about 20,100 workers and the cuts represent no more than 1 percent of its total.
