When Prince William advances in the royal line of succession and becomes the Prince of Wales, Kate Middleton will have a difficult decision to make. Following Princess Diana’s death, Camilla Parker Bowles married Prince Charles and took on the Duchess of Cornwall title.

Although Camilla is technically the Princess of Wales, she chose to be called by a different royal title after Diana died holding the moniker. When Charles and Camilla become king and queen, the Duchess of Cambridge will have to choose a new title.

Kate could choose to pay tribute to her late mother-in-law by taking on the Princess of Wales title. However, she could choose an alternative title once Prince William advances in his royal role.

Royal expert, Imogen Llyod-Webber told People Now that Kate may follow in Camilla’s footsteps when it comes to rejecting Diana’s beloved title. “At some moment, William is going to become Prince of Wales,” she said.

“At that moment there’s the question, is Kate going to choose to be called Princess of Wales? Camilla is actually Princess of Wales but, because of Diana, she opted to be the Duchess of Cornwall.”

If Kate did choose to take on Diana’s title, Llyod-Weber revealed the 37-year-old won’t be called the Princess of Wales often. “When William is Prince of Wales, if you met Kate, you’d still call her Your Royal Highness and then ma’am in conversation,” she explained.

“Then comes the big one. When William becomes king, Kate will be Queen Consort - at that moment, she is Her Majesty. If you met her, she’d be Your Majesty followed by ma’am.”

For now, Kate doesn’t have to think too much about her title change. She and Prince William are still the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and will maintain their title until Prince Charles ascends.
