"Keeping Up With The Kardashians" star Kim Kardashian came under fire on Twitter Thursday for allegedly using blackface in a promotional advertisement for her upcoming beauty line, KKW Beauty. The promotion of her new beauty line appears to be off to a rocky start.

In an effort to get fans excited about the upcoming KKW Beauty line, which is slated for a June 21 release date, Kardashian promoted the products with a highly stylized photo of herself. While fans were initially excited after her Tuesday announcement, it all took a turn when she shared the photo on Twitter. The photo was uploaded to her Instagram account as well.

Fans were quick to notice that something was wrong with the picture, noting her noticeably darker appearance. Some expressed on Twitter that they felt the photo's editing constituted a form of "blackface." Despite this, the controversial photo remains as the "KUWTK" star's Twitter profile picture.

Naturally, fans made an effort to call her out on Twitter for trying to pull off a deeper melanin look by way of a heavy makeup. Black Twitter in particular was quick to call her out.

There can be an argument made for Kardashian in that she wasn't purposefully doing blackface. In taking a closer look at the image, it looks too polished and airbrushed to be real. The photo that Kardashian posted to her social media accounts was likely heavily photoshopped. However, she did blindly support the darker version of herself by sharing the image.

It's also worth noting that photoshopped images of celebrities are a very common occurrence. In 2015, Disney star Zendaya took notice to a photo spread she did with "Modeliste" magazine. The publication not only reshaped her proportions, but they had also lightened her skin tone as well.

"These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have," Zendaya wrote on Instagram. "Anyone who knows who I am knows I stand for honest and pure self love. So I took it upon myself to release the real pic (right side) and I love it."

Photoshopping within celebrity photos has been used to improve body parts, skin complexion, scars, tattoos, cellulite and even eye color. It's certainly possible that the photo of Kardashian also fell victim to the same.

Kardashian's controversy follows her sister, Kylie Jenner, being accused of appropriating black culture. Jenner was attacked last week for wearing a camouflage bathing suit that many Twitter users believed resembled the ones Destiny Child sported several years ago. However, this is just one of the many incidents that have surfaced through the years of the Kardashian/Jenner clan appropriating black culture in particular.
