After years of jokes about their similar names and vague resemblance, Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney are finally sharing the screen together in this week’s episode of “LA to Vegas.”

According to the synopsis for Season 1, episode 3 of the Fox comedy, Mulroney guest stars as Captain Steve (Mulroney), Captain Dave’s (McDermott) rival, who is assigned to cover the latter’s regular flight route during his absence.

While the reason behind Dave’s absence is unclear, the pilot’s right hand is seen covered with bandage in the trailer for the episode. Dave’s apparent injury, however, doesn’t stop him from throwing shade at Steve when they meet at the airport.

“I’m married to the sky,” Dave tells Steve of his immediate return to work.

“I’m married to a model,” Steve brags.

“Catalog model,” Dave replies.

In another scene from the episode, Dave confronts Steve and tells him bluntly, “I’m talking to an overrated hack whose stick work is pedestrian.” Offended by what Dave says, Steve hits him with an uppercut, which results in him getting knocked to the ground.

“The confusion [between me and Mulroney] has been so real for so many years,” McDermott told Variety. “So the fact that we could poke fun at ourselves and finally be on screen together and create more confusion, I think, is perfect.”

“When they brought this idea to me, I thought it was genius,” McDermott told USA Today of his reaction when he learned that they’re bringing Mulroney to the show. “And, when I got the call, I thought, ‘I can’t blink now,’” Mulroney added.

While the two actors might have resented the public’s confusion between them in the past, McDermott said that they have “finally arrived at a place where it’s zen” and now they’re friends.

“I’d like to thank all of Dylan McDermott’s fans for just happening to be fans of mine,” Mulroney said. “It actually made the fan base a lot bigger.”

McDermott added, “If we were one person, we’d have an amazing career.”

Also in this week’s episode, Artem (Peter Stormare) and Nichole (Olivia Macklin) help Colin (Ed Weeks) plan his son’s birthday party.

“LA to Vegas” Season 1, episode 3, titled “Two and a Half Pilots,” airs on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 9 p.m. on Fox.
