Mexico head coach Juan Carlos Osorio likely breathed a huge sigh of relief Tuesday night in Port of Spain. Mexico escaped with three points in a 1-0 victory over a pesky Trinidad and Tobago side to stay in the top spot of CONCACAF behind a goal from Diego Reyes. The win means El Tri have 10 points, three points ahead of second-place Costa Rica and five points in front of third-place Panama, with up to four countries advancing to Russia 2018.

Osorio had previously asked Mexican fans for patience, but that may not be necessary considering Mexico's less-than-demanding schedule. Of Mexico's six remaining matches in the hexagonal, four will be at home. The final match of the season will be on the road against a Honduras side that is currently in fifth place and fell to the United States, 6-0, on March 24.

There are still plenty of matches ahead for Mexico outside of World Cup qualifying. Mexico's next match will be a "home" friendly against Croatia on May 27 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in what is basically a tune-up for the FIFA Confederations Cup in June.

When El Tri arrive in Russia they will be facing some stiff group competition. First, they begin with Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal side on June 18 in Kazan. Things get considerably less difficult when Mexico faces New Zealand in Sochi on June 21, but the final match will be against home-side Russia back in Kazan on June 24.

How Mexico performs may depend on how much Osorio can get out of his attack since the defense has been nothing short of exceptional. Mexico has only allowed one goal (to the U.S. in Columbus, Ohio) in hexagonal competition. Forwards Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, Carlos Vela and Raul Jimenez have just one goal between them in four matches.
