Sense8 Season 3
“Sense8” fans used the #NetflixNeeds hashtag to demand a full third season rather than a two-hour special. Netflix

“Sense8” was canceled by Netflix earlier this year after two seasons, and fans responded immediately by starting campaigns for the streaming platform to reverse their decision. It actually worked, and Netflix ordered a two-hour movie to wrap up the sci-fi drama. However, fans are now using the #NetflixNeeds hashtag to say that they want more than one special.

The #NetflixNeeds tag is filled with plenty of requests from subscribers all over the world. Some fans want “Game of Thrones” while others want the “Harry Potter” films to be made available. “Sense8” fans filled the tag with demands for a third season and beyond.

Some users pointed out that while a movie was nice, that wasn’t what the original campaigns were setting out to win. Both “Sense8” executive producers Lana and Lilly Wachowski and creator J. Michael Straczynski have confirmed that the drama, which follows a group of people with a psychic link, had a five-season plan.

“I’m big on five-year arcs,” Straczynski told Collider in 2015. “We have a rough structure for five years. Should Netflix decide to do it, we already have the second season worked out in great detail. And then, we have rough notes for the next three years, beyond that. I need to know where I’m going. I always write toward the ending, so I need to know where it’s going.”

“Sense8” viewers know that there is no way to shove three seasons into two hours. Inevitably, storylines will get cut. Fans want to see Netflix allow the writers to follow their original plan.

The latest Twitter campaign is not just because fans want to see the original story. Others cited the show’s diversity, inclusion of LGBT characters and the storylines that promote empathy and positivity.

Some Twitter users also used the #NetflixNeeds hashtag to encourage the company to promote “Sense8.” The cancellation has been blamed on poor viewership. Many viewers felt the show didn’t get a fair chance at surviving because Netflix doesn’t do the same promotional campaigns for every show.

While Netflix probably isn’t going to announce “Sense8” Season 3 right now, it seems like there is still hope. When Lana Wachowski announced the movie, she hinted that the two-hour special might not be the last time audiences see the cluster.

“It is my great pleasure as well as Netflix’s (believe me, they love the show as much as we do, but the numbers have always been challenging) to announce that there will be another two hour special released next year. After that… if this experience has taught me anything, you NEVER know,” she wrote in June.

In any case, a two-hour movie is better than a flat-out cancellation. “Sense8” Season 2 ended with a massive cliffhanger. Wolfgang (Max Riemelt) was kidnapped by BPO and the cluster fought back by uniting in person to take Whispers (Terrence Mann) and Jonah (Naveen Andrews) hostage.

The two-hour “Sense8” special does not have an air date, and it doesn’t sound like all the scheduling has been worked out yet. Alfonso Herrera, who plays Hernando, told Deadline that he hasn’t been given details. “I still have no idea how they’re going to manage to accommodate all the schedules,” he laughed. “But I know they’re going to do it. Because thanks to the fans, I do think that miracles happen, and thanks to the fans for bringing ‘Sense8’ back.”
