Sony has issued the 4.70 software update for its PlayStation 4 console. The update comes with a small patch for performance boost and brings some incremental changes for the console.

It is a small update of 340 MB, which you can download manually by clicking on this link if you have haven’t received it yet. It is a mandatory install, so your device would be expected to receive it sooner or later. Alternatively, you can check for the update by navigating to Settings>System Software Update.

You are advised to avoid shutting down the console until the update process is complete.

But, you might have to be careful with the update. PlayStation users have complained on Reddit and Sony’s Support Forums that the update made their devices freeze up.

“The past two updates have caused havoc with my ps4. The first time I've turned it on with an update available has sent it into spasm crashing, freezing and generally not being able to turn the system off or on properly. Last time it solved itself when I finally got the update installed. Not sure if it's going to survive this one. I should probably add that I'm on the Pro. Never had this trouble with my old launch PS4,” Reddit user Szynsky complained on PS4 thread.

Troubleshooting

In case, your device freezes up, you can try the following fixes:

  • Turn off PS4 by holding the power button, then press it again and hold it till you hear two beeps to boot into safe mode. While in safe mode, restore storage and restart a second time in safe mode to install the update.
  • You can also try rebuilding the database in safe mode with the LAN cable unplugged and then connecting to the internet and updating.
  • Another solution is to disconnect the external hard drive, restart the device in safe mode and reconnect the external hard drive. You will get an option of repairing the hard drive, after which you can try downloading the update again.

One fact, which has not been highlighted in the official change log, is that Sony has changed the iconography for the device, as pointed out by Polygon. The PlayStation Store, PlayStation Vue and PlayStation Now are now accessible in the form of flat icons, similar to Android’s Material design icons.
