Shay Carl Butler may be taking an indefinite break from YouTube but it doesn’t appear the Shaytards star is sweating it financially. Post scandal, take a look at what the famous family vlogger is reportedly worth.

The beginning

Before Shay Butler and his wife, Colette, started their now famous YouTube careers they were struggling to make ends meet. After working a number of jobs ranging from a door-to-door salesman to a radio DJ and granite countertop installer, Shay’s first channel was born in August 2007. Shay became an official YouTube partner, meaning he made money off the ads on his videos, in February 2008.

Ahead of his last year of his 20s, Shay decided to do something monumental and record every day of his and his family’s life for a year. The Shaytards channel was born in October 2008. At the time, the Butlers were making $2,000 a month from their content.

“I was now making more money than I had ever made doing something that I actually LOVED doing,” Shay told Forbes in 2011. “I had never committed myself to anything as much as I was to creating this online persona and developing a business plan for what we did.”

After openly discussing their previous dire financial situation in several videos, Shay and Colette announced they were officially debt free in 2011.

And then came the big time

Several years after hitting it big on YouTube, Disney purchased Maker Studios, the video supplier company Shay moved across country to help create in 2009, for $500 million. Exact financial details of the 2014 deal have remained secret, but Shay did mention the buyout was beyond his wildest dreams.

“This is going to change our lives and the lives of my children forever. This will change my kids kids lives,” Shay said in a vlog after the buyout went public. “This will change our family tree, our entire lineage, our posterity will be different forever... because one of the biggest companies in the world is buying the business I helped start.”

What’s Shay’s net worth?

Shay, who has at least five YouTube channels to his name, it’s believed to be worth a cool $25 million, according to CelebrityNetWorth. RichestCelebrities.org had a similar number, reporting Shay has a net worth of $30 million. Other sites have Shay’s earnings listed as high as $55 million. Social Blade, which monitors popularity on YouTube, has reported Shay makes anywhere from 40K to over 652K yearly just for the Shaytards channel. To date, Shaytards has just over 4.9 million subscribers and over 2.6 billion views.

Shay has not announced when he will return to YouTube but in September, he revealed he would be taking a year-long break. This, of course, was before the scandal which involved cam girl Aria Nina. Last month, the adult star revealed she and Shay were involved in a three-month online affair. Shay did not respond to her claims, but did reveal on Twitter that he was suffering from alcoholism, and said he would be seeking treatment because his “heart is sick.”
