A worker at the General Motors (GM) Orion Assembly Plant in Lake Orion, Michigan, was killed early Thursday morning after a fight broke out.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, who posted a statement about the incident on Twitter, said the altercation between the coworkers "resulted in the death of one victim" and the "suspect" is in custody.

The slain 49-year-old man from Pontiac, Michigan, was found unconscious and bleeding in the dock area of the plant when police arrived around 1:40 a.m., the Detroit News reported. Deputies were unable to revive the man, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news outlet.

The suspect was found standing in the dock area of the plant, near the victim's body. An item that is believed to have been used in the slaying was also recovered, the Detroit News said.

An investigation of what led to the incident is underway by police. An autopsy scheduled for Thursday, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Both the victim and suspect were contracted by GM as a third-party custodial company to clean the plant during off-production hours, with the victim only working for the company for a few months before his death.

The suspect, who is also in his late forties, is being held on possible homicide charges.

GM, which has security at all of its plants, canceled production Thursday at the facility, which builds the Chevy Bolt.

In a statement obtained by the Detroit Free Press, GM spokesperson Dan Flores, said, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim's family."
