Police in Caldwell, Idaho, on Friday were investigating a shooting at a senior citizens’ apartment complex that left two people dead, including the suspected shooter, and three people wounded.

The Caldwell Police Department said there were calls about an active shooter around 4:20 p.m. Thursday at the Portstewart Apartments. Officers were sent to the scene where multiple people were found shot, including an officer present during the shooting.

Three people, including the officer, were rushed to nearby hospitals to undergo treatment for their wounds. While the injuries of two victims weren’t released, the officer's wounds were described as nonlife-threatening.

Two people were declared dead at the scene, one of whom police said was the suspected shooter.

“It's a stable situation right now,” Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue told reporters Thursday. “The tragedy, along with it, there's a lot to digest for the public and for us as well. So this will take some time to work through everything.”

While there was no reported threat, police said the roads surrounding Portstewart Apartments were closed around 6 p.m. for investigators and not reopened until 11 p.m.

“We are still early in the investigation, and information is still very preliminary,” Caldwell Police Department Lt. Joey Hoadley told reporters.
