A 2-year-old child died Sunday after being found unresponsive in a pool in Tennessee.

The Bradley County Sheriff's Office said Monday the boy was declared dead at a hospital.

On Sunday, Bradley County E.M.S. and Bradley County Fire & Rescue were sent to an address in Charleston in reference to a possible drowning. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found the child to be in an unresponsive state. Authorities were told the neighbors found the boy in their pool Sunday afternoon.

Lifesaving efforts were administered at the scene by neighbors and emergency workers, WDEF reported. The child, who has not been identified, was rushed to Tennova Hospital, where doctors continued their efforts to revive him.

Authorities told Local 3 News the child had been taken to the hospital in critical condition.

It is unknown how long the child was in the water. It also remains unclear where the child's parents were or how the boy ended up in the pool.

Local police said they have launched an investigation into the death of the child. While it appears to be a case of drowning, the exact cause of death would be known after an autopsy.

This is a developing story.
