Twenty-one people died in a shipwreck off the north coast of Haiti, Agence France-Presse reported Thursday, citing a senior official at Haiti's civil protection directorate. Authorities said there were survivors, however, they did not immediately give a precise figure.

Those on board were trying to reach Providenciales Island in the neighboring Turks and Caicos. The ship had tried to return after running into bad weather, but was shipwrecked off the coast of Haiti overnight on Wednesday. The 21 bodies were found on the shore in the town of Borgne.
