A 29-year-old man in Washington, D.C., has been sentenced to prison time after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a woman.

Richard Goodwin was initially charged with first-degree sexual abuse for forcing himself on a woman twice in her apartment in the Kingman Park neighborhood in February 2021, D.C. Witness reported.

However, Goodwin pleaded out on two counts of third-degree sexual abuse as part of an agreement with prosecutors. As part of the agreement, both parties recommended concurrent prison sentences in the two- to four-year range.

Goodwin was invited to the apartment of the unnamed victim in February last year. After he entered the woman's home, the 29-year-old tried to initiate non-consensual sexual contact, prosecutors said.

The woman resisted, but Goodwin forced himself on her twice before leaving the scene, according to the prosecution.

Goodwin was arrested within hours of the assault.

“The crimes to which Mr. Goodwin pled guilty are horrendous and outside any range of what we should be able to expect from anyone in this community,” Judge Neal Kravitz said.

Goodwin's defense attorney Jason Tulley described his client's offense as out of character for him and noted Goodwin’s difficult upbringing and current family situation.

Although the judge acknowledged the defense attorney's statements, Kravitz said the crimes “warrant a significant period of incarceration.”

“To the extent there’s mitigation here, it has already been accounted for in the plea agreement,” the judge said.

Goodwin was sentenced to two years for each charge that will run concurrently.

As he has been held at the D.C. Jail since his arrest, he will receive credit for time served.

Goodwin will be required to register as a sex offender for 10 years. He will also spend five years on supervised release once he finishes serving his time.
