Geopolitical tensions have long influenced the energy industry, but recent events have underscored just how quickly disruption can ripple across global markets. "Those environments move quickly, and they leave very little room for error," Naughton said.
Companies that consistently navigate those periods successfully tend to share similar characteristics. They have simplified operational processes, established greater visibility across the site and equipped teams with timely, reliable information before conditions become more demanding.
Those investments may appear incremental during routine operations. Under pressure, they often become the difference between maintaining momentum and falling behind.
Bringing Greater Precision to Contractor Management
Few areas illustrate that shift more clearly than contractor management.
Industrial facilities routinely depend on hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of contractors to execute maintenance, turnarounds and capital projects. Yet despite representing one of the largest operational expenses, contractor activity has historically been managed with less visibility than many other parts of the business.
"Managing contractors at an industrial facility is a little like conducting an orchestra," Naughton said. "Every group has a different responsibility, but everyone has to perform in sync for the operation to succeed."

While companies closely monitor production output, equipment performance and material consumption, contractor work has often relied on fragmented processes and manual records that make it difficult to see the complete operational picture.
"What has always struck me is that contractor labor is often one of a company's largest expenses, yet historically it hasn't been managed with the same level of precision as other critical parts of the business," Naughton said.
Leading organizations are changing that approach by creating greater visibility into contractor activity across their facilities. The objective isn't simply better reporting. It's giving leaders the information they need to make better decisions while work is taking place.
"They're creating visibility into the work taking place across their facilities so leaders can make decisions based on facts instead of assumptions," Naughton said. "That's where better execution begins. When you remove guesswork, you improve accountability, strengthen financial oversight and give people the confidence to address small issues before they become much larger ones."
Technology's Real Value Is Better Decision-Making
The energy industry has invested heavily in digital transformation over the past decade. Yet many executives acknowledge that collecting more operational data hasn't automatically translated into better execution.
Naughton believes the distinction lies in how organizations use technology.
"We often assume better decisions come from having more data. In my experience, that's rarely the real challenge," he said.
Most organizations already possess an abundance of operational information. The challenge is helping people quickly identify what's relevant, trust the information and act with confidence.
"The organizations seeing the greatest impact start with the decision they're trying to improve, then use technology to support it," Naughton said.
That philosophy is increasingly shaping conversations around artificial intelligence. Rather than replacing operational expertise, AI-enabled analytics is helping experienced teams recognize patterns earlier, surface insights that might otherwise be overlooked and spend less time searching for information.
"Technology should make expertise more effective, not more complicated," Naughton said.
Adaptability Will Define the Next Era of Operational Excellence
For decades, industrial leaders measured operational excellence by efficiency. Increasingly, they're measuring it by something else: how quickly an organization can adapt when conditions change.
"We're entering a period where operational excellence will be defined less by efficiency alone and more by adaptability," Naughton said.
The strongest organizations are distinguished by how confidently they operate as conditions change.
"The pace of change isn't slowing down," Naughton said. "Whether it's supply chain disruption, workforce challenges or geopolitical instability, leadership teams will continue to face situations that require quick, informed decisions."
As the technology continues to evolve, its greatest value will be in strengthening human judgment, giving experienced leaders better information to make better decisions.
"Its real value lies in giving people the clarity and confidence to make better decisions," he said. "What it really comes down to is building organizations where better information and experienced judgment work hand in hand. That's what will define operational excellence over the next decade."
For an industry accustomed to uncertainty, that may prove to be the most important investment of all.
