A 3-month-old baby girl died after a rogue cow attacked the infant and her mother Wednesday. The woman was carrying the baby on her back when the cow came charging at her.

Two men were taking the cow to a seller when the animal suddenly became aggressive and ran toward a woman who was standing by the side of a road in Delta State, Nigeria. The woman did not notice the cow as she was looking in the other direction.

The baby, who was strapped to her mother's back, was severely injured in the attack. The long horns of the cow ruptured the skull of the baby, local media Tribune Online reported.

The infant died on the spot before medical assistance could be provided, police said. The duo who was herding the cow fled the scene immediately. Police later arrested them. It was not clear what charges were filed against them.

"It is confirmed. Only one baby died," said Bright Edafe, Delta State Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Daily Post Nigeria reported. It remains unclear if the victim's mother was also injured. The identities of the mother and child have not been revealed.

Local residents said this was not the first time the animal had attacked a person. Previously, the same cow injured an elderly man after straying into a court premise, located near to where the latest incident happened. People who were waiting outside the court building fled when the cow tried to attack them, Punching Metro reported.
