A woman's failed attempt to kill herself by consuming poison-laced ice cream accidentally took the life of her 5-year-old son and teen sister instead.

The 25-year-old mother, identified as Varsha, was taken into custody Wednesday for accidentally killing her son, Adwaith, and her 19-year-old sister, Drishya.

The woman mixed rat poison in ice cream during an attempt to take her own life at her home in the southern Indian state of Kerala on Feb.11.

Varsha reportedly consumed a portion of the ice cream and then retired to her room carelessly, leaving the leftover out in the open which her son and sister accidentally consumed.

Later that night, the child began vomiting and was rushed to the hospital after his condition worsened. The child was pronounced dead the next morning.

Following the child's death, Drishya too fell sick and was rushed to the hospital. After a week-long battle for life, she died Wednesday.

As the mother did not experience any sickness after consuming the poison-laced ice-cream, she did not inform anybody of her actions.

The family initially thought Adwaith and Drishya fell sick after consuming food that the family had ordered from a restaurant that night.

However, one of the family's relatives was suspicious of Varsha. Based on his complaint, a case was registered on Feb. 17 and she was subsequently detained for questioning.

During the interrogation, Varsha confessed to the crime following which she was taken into custody and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and abetment of suicide by a child, or insane or delirious person or an idiot, or a person intoxicated.

She remained in custody as of Wednesday and details regarding her bail plea were not known. It also remained unclear as to what provoked her to attempt to kill herself.

In another incident in Kerala, last year, a woman killed her children before taking her own life. Krishnakumari killed her two children, aged five and six months, by feeding them food laced with poison. She then killed herself by consuming the same food.
