A 54-year-old woman was shot multiple times in the chest in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Wednesday evening. The authorities reached the spot at Baxter Street where the incident took place at around 8.15 p.m. EST.

The woman was transferred to the Rhode Island Hospital where she died. Local reports said the neighbors in the area heard gunshots and mistook it for fireworks for New Year celebrations. It became clear to them only after the sirens went off in the area.

The motive behind the shooting was unclear. The authorities did not disclose any further information about the case. The name and details of the victim were also not released by the police.

Pawtucket Police Department’s detective sergeant, Christopher LeFort, said, “This is an ongoing investigation and more details will be released as it progresses”.

In a similar incident in Gary City, Texas, a Sheriff's Deputy was shot and killed during a traffic stop, early Tuesday morning. The cause of the shooting was not clear. The policeman, 28-year-old, Deputy Chris Dickerson was a deputy at the Panola County Sheriff's Office. He sustained gunshot injuries to the leg. The suspect, identified as Gregory Newsom, was later arrested near Lousiana on Wednesday. While in custody, the murder weapon, a semiautomatic gun, was retrieved from the suspect.
