An 8-year-old girl whose mutilated body with her eye gouged out was found on Aug. 5 was killed as part of a human sacrifice, police said Monday. The incident took place in a village in Munger, in the Indian state of Bihar.

According to police, the girl's family initially claimed that she had been raped and killed. However, an autopsy report released over the weekend ruled out rape, Hindustan Times reported.

An investigation into the incident revealed that a local occultist advised a man to sacrifice a girl to prevent his wife’s pregnancy from ending in a miscarriage.

Munger Superintendent of Police (SP) JJ Reddy told reporters that Parvez Alam, who claimed to be a local occultist, asked a villager, identified as Dilip Kumar Choudhary, to carry out a human sacrifice.

During questioning, Choudhary admitted to killing the girl. He also said that Alam asked for the eye of a 10-year-old boy or a girl so that he could make an amulet for the woman with the blood and eyes of a minor. After the gruesome crime, the occultist made the amulet that Choudhary's wife wore around her neck, India.com reported.

“We committed the crime on the instigation of Alam,” the main accused, Choudhary, told police.

Choudhary and Alam have been arrested by police along with two other accused – Tanvir Alam and Dasrath Kumar – who allegedly were accomplices in the case. It has been learned that Choudhary has four children, two sons and two daughters, but wanted a fifth.

The girl went missing on the evening of Aug. 4 while returning home after she went out with her father to the banks of the river Ganga. Police said that three of the accused gathered in the area where the girl went and caught her.

When she did not return home, her family filed a police complaint. The girl's mutilated body was found the next morning with severe injuries to her private parts and her right eye gouged out.

Police recovered bloodstained cloth and a pendant and sent it for forensic examination. Earlier, police had detained 12 people in the case, but they were released after questioning.

The occultist was arrested from his home after Choudhary confessed to his crime.
