Starting Tuesday, Amazon warehouse employees will no longer have to wear masks, whether or not they are vaccinated.

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced loosening mask recommendations, which has meant 70% of Americans would no longer be required to wear masks.

The resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic because of the Omicron variant triggered more mandates and requirements for vaccines and masks across the country. Now, with case numbers way down, many companies, states, and cities have cited lower caseloads and hospitalizations as a reason for loosening restrictions and mandates.

The new rule at Amazon applies unless there is a local mandate or law that requires masks. The news was announced in a notice sent to workers and viewed by CNBC. Amazon has not mandated vaccines among its employees.

“This announcement is an exciting step in our path to normal operations,” the notice read, emphasizing that employees who prefer wearing a face mask are “welcome to do so.”

Previously most companies had only lifted mask mandates for vaccinated workers, including Amazon and Walmart. Many Wall Street banks did as well. Tyson Foods, one of the U.S. largest meat producers, and Norwegian Cruise Line also loosened their mask mandates for vaccinated workers.

However, the CDC still recommends wearing masks in large public gathering spaces like airports, public transportation, large events, schools, etc., though school mask mandates in New York state, and in many others, are expected to be lifted.

The changes to mask recommendations made by the CDC rely on hospitalizations and healthcare capacities in particular areas, not on caseloads. The CDC’s notice has been met with a lot of criticism while most indoor businesses, cities, and states have loosened or let go of their mask mandates.
