KEY POINTS

  • Every device has a name assigned to it
  • Some manufacturers give names that are easy to identify, but some do not
  • Here's how to rename Android devices

Today's devices, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and more, have model names assigned to them for easier identification. This is evident whenever a user opens up certain functions, such as when looking for Bluetooth devices. Each detected device will be identifiable using its name.

While some manufacturers make it easy for users to locate their devices using names, some aren't that good at it, Android Police noted. Some companies that make it easy for users include Google and Nokia, which name their devices easily (“Google Pixel 3” and “Nokia 7.1,” for example). Some, like Samsung and ASUS, might not make it that easy (“SM-A515U” and “ASUS_IOO1D,” for example).

Thankfully, there's a way to rename an Android device so that users can personalize it for their own convenience.

Instead of looking for “SM-N975UZWAATT” (which refers to a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 with 256GB and Aura White color from AT&T in the U.S., as per TechWalls), users can rename the device to “John's Galaxy Note 10,” which is a more logical name for a Galaxy Note 10 belonging to a user named John.

It's easy to rename an Android handset. There are two ways to do so, which users can check out below.

Via desktop

The easiest way to rename an Android device is by using a desktop or laptop computer that's connected to the internet. Users will need to do the following:

  • First, users will need to proceed to Google Play Settings, which will include a list of all registered devices. Users can access it by heading to https://play.google.com/settings.
  • Second, once there, users should look for the device that will be renamed, then click on the “Edit” button at the right of the device name.
  • Third, the device's name will become editable. Users should type their desired device name, then click on “Update” at the right. Otherwise, users should click on “Cancel” if they don't want to proceed with renaming the device.

Android Police noted that Google will synchronize the renaming across all of its services, which means users won't have to rename the device several times.

Via smartphone

The Play Store smartphone app doesn't allow renaming devices. To do this on a smartphone, users will need to open the Find My Device page then rename devices there.

Users will be presented with the list of their devices on the webpage. Users should tap on the device to be renamed, then give it a new name once it becomes editable.
