In the comic book world, Aquaman is probably the least liked superhero in the Justice League. People always seem to favor Superman, Wonder Woman or Batman, and even The Flash.

“Aquaman” director James Wan knows the star of his upcoming DCEU movie has always been considered a “joke,” but he guarantees that his standalone movie will definitely change their mind.

In fact, Wan revealed that Warner Bros. came up to him and gave him two options for the star of their next superhero flick. The first was The Flash (Ezra Miller), and the other was Aquaman (Jason Momoa). Wan’s choice came out surprising.

“Aquaman has been the joke of the comic book world, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought how cool that would be,” Wan told Entertainment Weekly. “Let’s take the character everybody makes fun of and do something really interesting with him.”

Jason Momoa, who plays the title character, could not agree more. He said the standalone film will really delve into the backstory of Arthur Curry, and the actor said fans would even become invested in his childhood.

“‘Justice League’ was only a weekend in Arthur Curry’s life,” Momoa said. “This is a totally different beast. In ‘Aquaman,’ you see when his parents met and what happened to hem. Then the little boy being raised and finding his powers and going through that and never being accepted on either side. And then becoming this man who puts up all these walls. You just slowly see this man harden up and be completely reluctant wanting to be king and not knowing what to do with these powers he has. I think James Wan just killed it.”

“Aquaman” will also have a different feel compared to “Justice League,” but Momoa said that they will maintain the superhero’s looks in his standalone film. The actor earlier said during “Justice League: The Art of the Film” that Curry’s tattooed body and colored eyes are actually his and the “Justice League” director’s ideas.

“Zack [Snyder] had the idea for the tattoos. Everyone wanted to have a little bit of blond in the hair. For the eyes, I always liked that Van Gogh green color you can get lost in; it draws you in, but you’re also scared by it. So I wanted to have that look,” he revealed.

“Aquaman” is slated for release on Dec. 21, 2018.
