Apple AirTags are small, wireless devices that can be attached to anything from a shirt sleeve to a suitcase. It senses movement and proximity to communicate with other AirTags in the area.

The device uses Bluetooth LE to connect with your iPhone or iPad and then communicates with Apple's iBeacon micro-location system. The AirTag also has an accelerometer and gyroscope which sends a notification to your device if the product is dropped or shaken.

Recent reports have suggested that Apple's AirTags may be used for tracking people without their knowledge or consent. Some people are worried about the new feature, expressing concerns over infringement of their privacy

There are several ways by which someone could track you using an AirTag. They can attach the AirTag to your belongings without your knowledge or consent and then use the Find My app to track your location. In another way, they can place it in a location you frequently visit, such as your home or office, and then use the Find My app to track your movements.

Signs you are being tracked by an AirTag

Here's how to find out if you are being tracked by AirTag:

If you're concerned that someone might be tracking you with an AirTag, there are signs to look out for. First, check if you have the Find My app installed on your iPhone. Then, open the app and look for any unknown devices. If you see anything suspicious, tap on it and then select the "Remove from Account" option.

If you don't have the Find My app installed, you can still find out if you are being tracked or not. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for the system service called "Significant Locations." If this is turned on, it means your iPhone is keeping a tab on your activities. Tap on it and then select "Clear History".

You can also try putting your AirTag in a sealed envelope and then check it after 24 hours. If the AirTag is still working, it means it hasn't been tampered with and is probably safe. However, if the AirTag is no longer working, you should take appropriate precautions.

How to protect yourself

There are a few ways by which you can protect yourself from being tracked by AirTags:

  • Make sure your phone is not broadcasting its own BLE signal so that the AirTags cannot detect the same and broadcast its own signal back.
  • Turn off Bluetooth on your phone so that you accidentally don't connect with an AirTag.
  • Protect your privacy by using a tracker blocker.
