KEY POINTS

  • Arsenal looks to recruit well-rounded midfielders
  • The Gunners might consider a move for Celtic star Ryan Christie and Sevilla's Joan Jordan
  • Mikel Arteta has provided an update on Thomas Partey's injury

Arsenal could be looking at two notable signings this transfer window to fix their problems in the midfield.

This past summer, the Gunners have splurged on the transfers of Thomas Partey and Gabriel Magalhaes. However, as the season progresses, it appears that Mikel Arteta is still in need of a well-rounded attacking midfielder with Celtic star Ryan Christie now on Arsenal’s radar, 90min reported, citing unnamed sources.

According to the report, the 25-year-old is “considering his options” and would be open to leaving Celtic if the club entertains a concrete offer anytime soon.

It was also noted that Christie has shown no indications of renewing his contract which is set to expire after 2021/22 season, making him a target to a number of clubs across Europe’s top five major leagues.

Christie has maintained his fine form for the reigning Scottish Premiership champs this season and has emerged as a prospect in the current window’s transfer market.

Though Christie has yet to score a single goal this season, he is still considered a key figure at Celtic after dishing out 11 assists in all competitions.

Aside from Christie, Arsenal has also been linked to Sevilla’s Joan Jordan, Football.london reported.

It has been quite known that the Gunners have been showing apparent interest in the 26-year-old as Arteta looks to bolster his roster this month.

Prior to being linked to the Sevilla star, Arsenal has already looked at Real Madrid’s Isco in recent weeks. But according to the report, Jordan’s name came as a surprise at Emirates Stadium.

Jordan’s release clause in his contract is currently at around £55 million ($75 million). However, Sevilla could reportedly consider parting ways with the central midfielder this month for less than the said amount or even as low as £32 million ($44 million) transfer fee.

Most clubs in Spain are “desperate” to cash-in on transfers due to the financial blow caused by the pandemic.

Apart from the fee, Arsenal would also have to convince Jordan to pack his things as he is said to be "super comfortable" at Sevilla at the moment.

Meanwhile, Arteta has set a return date for his star midfielder Partey, who has missed 12 games since being forced to leave the field against Aston Villa last month.

"He [Partey] is feeling good and we will assess him,” the manager said in a recent press conference. “He needs another two or three good sessions to see if he is 100% available to play. If that is the case, great news for us."
