Android's been racking a series of big news with the Redmi Note 7 Pro leak and the Android Security Patch coming to Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 this month. Additionally, the latest on Google's upcoming Android Q mobile operating system suggests that networks may have more power locking down smartphones of users.

Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Update

While the ZenFone Max Pro M1 update will come with minimal changes as with the previous version, the changes will still have significant impact. For January 2019, ZenfFone's security patch addresses system and kernel vulnerabilities. The update also promises system stability improvements despite affecting some Qualcomm components.

The Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 update comes with FOTA version OPM1.WW_Phone-15.2016.1811.338-20181206. The phone's Android version will remain Oreo since Asus will reportedly release its Android 9.0 Pie update during the Mobile World Conference (MWC 2019) in February.

Redmi Note 7 Pro Leak

Another Android phone is making waves as the Redmi Note 7 Pro specs leaked recently. During the Redmi Note 7 launch event in the previous week, the Redmi Note 7 Pro briefly made a cameo although the company chose not to share specific details. Nonetheless, some disclosed specs include a Sony IMX586 primary sensor. A Weibo tipster, on the other hand, suggested that the phone will retail for around CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs. 15,800). However, all details should be taken with a grain of salt until the company releases the final details.

Android Q Update

The upcoming Google Android Q update will reportedly give carriers more power to lock down the smartphones of users. Specifically, four new commits can be found under the Android Gerrit source code management title: “Carrier restriction enhancements for Android Q.” Carriers can lock out their competitors on a whitelist/blacklist basis. This can be bad news for Android users as they will have less freedom to pick the network of their choice. Nonetheless, Google has yet to issue the final details of its Android Q update.
