Beyonce gave a powerful performance at the 2016 BET (Black Entertainment Television) Awards held Sunday. Kendrick Lamar also joined the singer on stage as they rocked to “Freedom” in a surprise opening performance for the awards show.

The multi-awarded singer has managed to shock the celebrities and fans, who watched the BET Awards at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater on Sunday. A shallow pool filled with water dominated the stage as Beyonce and her dancers gave a rousing performance to the singer’s hit song, E!News reported.

For the performance, the singer wore her trademark bodysuit with a sheer long-sleeved top that featured intricate beaded designs. Black tassels also lined the sleeves of her top that started from her wrists up to the sides of her chest. To complete the look, Beyonce wore black fishnet stockings and kept her feet bare for her water-filled performance.

The former Destiny’s Child member also displayed her amazing vocals as her backup dancers danced and splashed water all around her. Beyonce also participated in some tribal-like dancing moves where she and her dancers stomped on the water-filled stage. Aside from water, the singer also utilized fire as part of the special effects during her “Freedom” performance.

Another surprise that shocked fans and viewers was the sudden appearance of Lamar. The rapper emerged from below the stage’s floor in a plume of smoke to join Beyonce in her performance. The two musicians even stomped together in the pool of water during the latter part of the song. Beyonce and Lamar ended their powerful performance with the mother-of-one draping an arm around the rapper’s shoulders as she belted out the last line of the song.

A short clip of the two music artists’ performance was also shared on social media through the BET’s official Twitter account. The clip was captioned, “They bringing the elements out on the stage tonight! #BETAwards.”

Meanwhile, Beyonce was one of the winners during the 2016 BET Awards. The singer was awarded the Video of the Year honor for her “Formation” music video. However, it was Beyonce’s mother Tina Knowles who accepted the award during the event, ABC News reported.

Knowles explained in a speech at the BET Awards that the “Halo” crooner needed to immediately leave after her “Freedom” performance given her concert tour schedule. She also thanked Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy, as well as the singer’s husband Jay-Z in her speech.
