Boxing great Ray Mancini thinks Saul “Canelo” Alvarez could become the pound-for-pound no. 1 if he beats Gennady Golovkin “decisively.”

Canelo made history in boxing after finishing Sergey Kovalev, a world champion who is two weight classes ahead of him. Now that he is already a four-division title holder, some in boxing still think that Canelo still has to close a chapter in his career to become boxing’s pound-for-pound no. 1 – a third fight with “GGG.”

In a recent talk with Fight Hub TV, legendary boxer Mancini weighed in on Canelo’s case as the new pound-for-pound king. According to Mancini, it is “hard to name a fighter no. 1” but Canelo is definitely on “top 5.”

“Not no. 1 but he’s on top 5. No doubt,” Mancini said of Canelo.

“A lot of good fighters, it’s hard to call one guy pound-for-pound no. 1 but Canelo is in top 5,” Mancini added.

When asked about what Canelo should do to secure the said title, Mancini admitted that he isn’t sure. However, just like other boxing personalities, “Boom Boom” urges Canelo to fight Golovkin again. But this time, Mancini wants Canelo to win without any controversy.

“I think I like to see him fight GGG again and win emphatically, and clearly and decisively,” Mancini said.

This wasn’t the first time Mancini talked about Canelo being one of the best fighters in the world today. Ahead of the Kovalev fight, Mancini already said that he admired the Mexican’s pride to fight a bigger fighter in his own weight class and for not pushing for a catchweight.

“I give it to him. He’s one of the all time greats if he beats Kovalev,” Mancini said when Canelo moved up to fight Kovalev.

Despite being convinced that Canelo could become no. 1 by defeating his nemesis Golovkin, Mancini also thinks that the said fight may never happen. A few weeks ago, Mancini predicted that Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya would never allow Canelo-GGG 3 to actualize.

“There’s still controversy. Let’s do it a third. Why wouldn’t they do a third? If this was Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta, they’d come right back and do it,” Mancini said.

“Canelo is a terrific fighter. He should go right back in there [with GGG], but [Oscar] De La Hoya wouldn’t allow it to happen. So I don’t think he’s ever going to get back in the ring with GGG again. De La Hoya won’t allow it,” Mancini continued.
