A 21-year-old Mississippi man, who was shot dead after he stabbed his mother and grandmother in a federal government office, was identified as Branen Carter. The young man died of gunshot wound Monday.

According to reports, Carter was at the Social Security Administration office in McComb with his mother, Lee Anna Turnage, and grandmother, Ann Carter, when the incident took place. Turnage and Ann Carter reportedly had an appointment there and gave Branen a ride.

The Enterprise-Journal reported, citing two witnesses, that there was an argument between Branen and Turnage before the stabbings. A security official fatally shot Branen after he attacked his relatives.

The mother and grandmother were hospitalized, and were reportedly in stable condition at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb.

Department of Homeland Security Cmdr. Russell Adcox confirmed the assault and shooting. The Federal Protective Service, which provides security for government agencies, released a statement:

"At approximately 11:00 A.M. Central, a protective security officer at the McComb, Mississippi, Social Security Administration Office witnessed an individual attack and stab two other individuals in the lobby, ultimately shooting the attacker. Three individuals were taken to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. The details of this incident are currently under investigation by the Federal Protective Service, McComb Police Department, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation."

Director of Communications for the Federal Protective Service, Robert Sperling, told the Clarion Ledger his agency has been using armed security guards at federal agencies it oversees.

“It’s a cornerstone. We have officers in social security offices and most federal agencies across the country, such as the IRS,” Sperling said, adding the identity of the security guard will be released once the investigation is completed.

In an incident over the weekend, a 31-year-old man was taken into custody after he fatally stabbed his mother in her Fair Lawn home, New Jersey. Police records showed the accused was arrested two years back for stabbing his brother with a knife.

In another incident, a 30-year-old man was arrested in April for allegedly stabbing his mother to death and critically injuring his father in San Juan Capistrano, California.
