  • Pelosi's ill-timed gesture occurred as Biden talked about the health of soldiers breathing in toxic fumes in Afghanistan
  • Many took to social media to call Pelosi's action odd
  • Pelosi was once caught ripping her copy of former President Donald Trump's speech during his State of the Union

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has come under fire following her odd applause to President Joe Biden’s remarks about “burn pits” in the Middle East.

During Tuesday’s State of the Union, Biden outlined four items in his “Unity Agenda for the Nation” initiative, which included support for soldiers stationed in Afghanistan who were breathing fumes from nearby burn pits.

Burn pits are areas where wastes of war, including medical and hazardous material as well jet fuel, are incinerated. The most common materials incinerated in burn pits include human waste, paint, unexploded ordnance and metal cans, among others, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

“My administration is providing assistance with job training and housing, and now helping lower-income veterans get VA care debt-free,” the president said. “Our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan faced many dangers. One was stationed at bases and breathing in toxic smoke from ‘burn pits.’”

As the president delivered his speech, Pelosi was seen rubbing her knuckles together and grinning behind Biden in a gesture that many social media users and GOP members said was ill-timed and odd.

“What the hell is this reaction from Nancy Pelosi to Biden talking about soldiers breathing in toxic smoke from burn pits,” Greg Price, a senior digital strategist at X Strategies LLC, wrote in a tweet.

“So weird…” Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., said.

“What secret taskmaster was Nancy Pelosi signaling with this hippy hippy shake?” Nick Gillespie, the editor-at-large of libertarian magazine Reason, wrote.

“Here's proof that Democrats were only half-listening to Biden's speech and were told to clap like seals at everything he says,” stated the Twitter account for the conservative radio show “Bongino Show.”

Pelosi’s recent reaction reminded many of her actions in 2019. At the time, she was filmed ripping up her copy of former President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech on camera. The same year, Pelosi was also seen clapping and pointing at Trump from where she sat behind him.

President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Pelosi on Tuesday made history for being the first time two women sat behind the president during the State of the Union.
