Camilla Parker Bowles may be one of the reasons why Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are not called princesses.

Victoria Arbiter, a royal contributed, said on Yahoo UK’s “The Royal Box” that Camilla chose the title of Duchess of Cornwall after marrying Prince Charles in 2005 instead of being called the Princess of Wales. The choice was made out of respect to the late Princess Diana, who was also known as the Princess of Wales.

Following Camilla’s decision, the title of duchess was officially brought into the royal family. As such, when Prince William wed Middleton, his wife didn’t become a princess but was known as the Duchess of Cambridge. The same thing happened with Prince Harry’s wife, Markle, who is officially known as the Duchess of Sussex.

Meanwhile, Kate Williams, a royal historian, also talked about Camilla’s future title when Prince Charles becomes king.

“There has not been an official notification, and Charles has said in a few interviews, he used the word Queen, it’s obviously more Charles’ expectation and wishes that she would be Queen. But at the moment, the official line is that she’ll be Princess Consort,” she said.

According to Arbiter, Camilla will most likely be called queen consort when the monarchy is handed over to Prince Charles because the king won’t stand for her being anything less.

Prince Charles and Camilla have been married for the past 14 years, but they have been together much longer than that. The couple dated in the 1970s, but they were separated due to Prince Charles’ official duties. While he was away on his mission, the heir to the throne found out that Camilla had plans to wed Andrew Parker Bowles.

Shortly after their wedding, Prince Charles dated Princess Diana, and they tied the knot in 1981. Their marriage didn’t last and they divorced in 1996. While Prince Charles was still married to Princess Diana, he had an affair with Camilla.
