In an exclusive interview today with the Daily Express, Mr. Hancock disclosed information about the spending pledge. He also promised an additional £83 million annually for scientists working around the clock to find a solution to one of the biggest health crises plaguing the present time.

This means that the UK will be spending billions of pounds over the next decade. The extra funding came into being after media outlets highlighted the massive disparity between the money set aside for research on cancer and brain diseases like Alzheimer's. The cash infusion will form part of what has been referred to as the Dementia Moonshot or the hunt for the Holy Grail or cure for dementia.

A Heartbreaking Condition

Mr. Hancock’s grandmother, Pem Hills, is among those who suffered from dementia. The Health Secretary said that money is the center of the policy, but they will embark on a national mission to discover a cure.

The Health Secretary is optimistic the moonshot is going to electrify and stimulate the research community, many of which are based in the UK. He also revealed there are promising new drugs that may slow down dementia’s onset. He is also hoping that such drugs can eventually halt the disease.

According to Mr. Hancock, his grandmother suffered from dementia during her last five years on earth. He recalled she used to be quick-witted, and to watch her brain being devoured by dementia is heartbreaking.

Secretary Hancock also said that based on personal experience, it would really be great if the onset of dementia can be delayed. This can help a lot of families. Finding a cure would be a big leap forward for humanity. He said that he is very hopeful this will happen.

£166 Million Annually

The financial boost, which will put around £166 million annually in the coffers, will be primarily spent on researches that would try to find means to enhance dementia treatment. Some of the factors that are being considered as plausible research subjects are neurotechnologies, and advanced therapeutics.

It is the National Institute for Health Research that will administer the budget for research. With such a promising project, the future is bright as regards to the possibility of finding proper dementia treatment.
