The first “Captain Marvel” reviews are in, and it sounds like Carol Danvers is the superhero fans have been waiting for. While full reviews are not up yet, social media reactions indicate that the action movie is going to be another blockbuster hit.

The movie follows Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), a human with Kree DNA and no memory of her life on Earth as an Air Force pilot. The alien DNA gives her powers and allows her to join their group of warriors. She comes back to Earth when the shape-shifting Skrulls, who the Kree are at war with, start infiltrating the planet. That’s when she meets S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Several critics praised the cast. Unsurprisingly, Academy Award winner Brie Larson is said to “shine” (both literally and figuratively), but her supporting cast is apparently amazing too. Fandango’s Erik Davis named Lashana Lynch the MVP while Collider’s Steven Weintraub and Moviefone’s Drew Taylor said Ben Mendelsohn was the real scene stealer. Collider’s Perri Nemiroff was a big fan of both.

Of course, first reactions were also pleased with the 90s setting. Den of Geek’s Kayti Burt loved the music while Davis (above) said it felt like a ‘90s sci-fi movie. ComingSoon.net’s Sabina Graves felt Captain Marvel was similar to the big screen heroines from the era.

There are a few tiny pieces of constructive criticism in the early reactions. IndieWire’s Kate Erbland warned that the beginning is “purposefully confusing” while Slash Film’s Peter Sciretta called the music choices “too obvious.” Still, their reactions were overall very positive.
