KEY POINTS

  • The recalled ceiling fans pose impact injury hazards
  • There have been three reports of property damage to drywall
  • Several model numbers are included in the recall

A company is recalling about 77,900 ceiling fans because they may pose impact injury hazards. Customers should contact the company to have their fans replaced.

The problem with the recalled products is that the blades can detach from the fan while in use, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said. So far, there have been 60 reports of the issue. While no injuries have been reported, there have been three reports of the blades inflicting property damage to drywall.

The recall affects Hong Kong China Electric Appliance Manufacture Company's (HKC) Harbor Breeze 52-inch Belleisle Bay and Honeywell 52-inch Rio ceiling fans. These are actually identical ceiling fans but are simply "branded differently," the CPSC explained.

The affected Harbor Breeze 52-inch Belleisle Bay ceiling fans come under model numbers 40650 – with a brushed nickel housing finish – and 40651 – with an oil-rubbed bronze housing finish. The Honeywell Rio ceiling fans have model numbers 50514, 51623, 51624, 50195 and 51030.

The affected models have three fan blades, "a frosted, cased white glass bowl light and a 3-speed reversible motor with remote control," the CPSC noted. They were sold online on various websites, including Lowes.com, Amazon.com and Overstock.com from February 2018 to this August. Images of the recalled ceiling fans are available on the CPSC and HKC websites. The company website also has the UPC codes and finish of each affected model.

Customers who have an affected product are being advised to stop using it and instead, contact HKC to make sure the item is affected by the recall. The company has provided instructions on how to locate the model number on the unit and the steps to follow in order to register your fan and get a replacement. People should take a photo of the fan and provide information on where it was purchased from.

However, those who have more than five affected fans should call the recall hotline at 888-232-9895. Those with questions can also contact the hotline or email the company at ceilingfanrecall@sedgwick.com.
