Volkswagen has recalled nearly 289,000 of its Audi SUVs because liquid spills could penetrate the computer control module, which would cause it to shut down and suddenly reduce the power of the engine.

The recall affects certain 2021 to 2022 Q5 Sportback and SQ5 Sportback models, as well as 2018 to 2022 Q5 and SQ5 models.

If a liquid spill occurs in the rear seat or water enters the body seam underneath the vehicle, it could penetrate the computer control module. This could cause a halt of the system as it enters a safety mode, which would unexpectedly diminish the vehicle’s engine power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The vehicle would remain steerable, and the brake system is fully operable as the engine goes into an emergency mode with reduced power, Volkswagen said.

To repair the issue, Audi dealers will install a protective cover on the computer control module and seal the underbody seam as necessary free of charge to the vehicle owner.

Affected SUV owners are expected to be notified of the recall on Feb. 24.
