If rumors are to be believed, West London-based Premiership giants Chelsea are closing in on Portuguese Primeira Liga side Benfica's Spanish defensive midfielder Javi Garcia and are expected to prepare a summer bid that will lure away the player to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea reportedly sent scouts to monitor the 25-year-old in action when Benfica played Maritimo earlier in the season. The Blues could use an experienced midfielder in the defense who can effectively stand his ground against the opposition and make the required passes to the men upfront, and Garcia is an intelligent selection.

The Premiership side, according to a Tribal Football report, has also made enquiries about Garcia's Benfica team mate and Portuguese international forward Nelson Oliviera. More reports on Garcia and Chelsea's interest are to follow.

Garcia, who arrived at Benfica from Spanish La Liga side Real Madrid in 2009 on a five-year contract, has made as many as 120 appearances for the Estadio da Luz-based side in all competitions so far.
