  • Chelsea beats goalless Morecambe in a one-sided game at Stamford Bridge
  • Blues boss Frank Lampard praises Timo Werner and Kai Havertz
  • The pair scored two of Chelsea's four goals

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is nothing but pleased with two of the Blues’ expensive signings.

After back-to-back devastating defeats to Arsenal and Manchester City, Chelsea has bounced back with a bang. Lampard’s side thumped Morecambe, 4-0, on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.

What’s even more interesting was that Blues’ star acquisition Timo Werner finally ended his 13-game goal-scoring drought with a sensational close-range strike at the 44th minute.

Delighted with Werner’s performance, Lampard fired back at critics and pointed out that he is well aware of his ward’s qualities--specifically, scoring goals.

“I'm just pleased for him [Werner] because strikers want to score goals, he's had a lot of near misses in that time,” Lampard said in his post-match interview. “He'd been getting into positions to score goals but they hadn't been going in for him.”

"So I was pleased to play him today and for him to get confidence and get a goal,” he added. “He gets his goal and that's important."

Aside from Werner, Kai Havertz also wrote his name on the ledger in the second half. The former Bundesliga star was also the orchestrator of Werner’s goal, improving his English Premier League tally to five goals and six assists this season.

Like the rest of Chelsea, Havertz has been put on the spot in recent weeks. However, the Blues manager insists that every player who comes into the English Premier League needs time before he can finally reach his peak.

"I think the level, I can't call that because there are endless levels Kai [Havertz] can go up, because of the potential of the player and he's (still) young,” the head coach explained. “He had Covid and suffered a bit and has come back. Today I saw and again in the week in training I saw him fitter and stronger.”

“There are levels for Kai to go up, but again we have to remain patient,” he continued. "With him [Werner] and Kai coming into the Premier League, some of the greatest Premier League players have needed time to settle to the league. And it's a nice little step for both of them."

Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi also contributed with one goal apiece in the club’s latest win.

The Blues are currently at the ninth spot in the English top-flight standings and would have a comfortable six-day rest before taking on the No. 18-seeded Fulham FC on Saturday.
