KEY POINTS

  • Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling are set to star in Netflix's big-budget feature film "The Gray Man"
  • The Netflix movie reunites Evans with "Avengers" and "Captain America" directors Joe and Anthony Russo
  • The Russos are aiming to make "The Gray Man" a franchise with Gosling's character as the center

"Avengers" star Chris Evans will be teaming up with Ryan Gosling for what has been hailed as Netflix's "most financially ambitious" movie yet.

Evans and Gosling are set to star in the spy thriller film "The Gray Man," Deadline reported. The movie is based on a series of bestselling books by Mark Greaney and will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.

The Russo brothers helmed several critically acclaimed Marvel movies, including Evans' 2014 "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." Joe wrote the script for "Endgame" with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Variety reported.

"The Gray Man," which has a hefty budget amounting to $200 million, follows ex-CIA operative turned killer for hire Court Gentry (Gosling). He is pursued by his former colleague and now-nemesis Lloyd Hansen (Evans).

The Russo brothers believe that the Bourne-like story could potentially score more sequels focusing on Gosling's character.

"The intention is for it to be competitive with any theatrical, and the ability to do with Gosling and Evans is a dream for us. The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it," Joe told Deadline of the movie.

"We have all committed to the first movie, and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie," he continued. "These are master assassins, and Gosling’s characters gets burned by the CIA and Evans’ character has to hunt him down. We have a great working relationship with Netflix, and we go back almost 20 years with Scott Stuber. We formed AGBO to be an agnostic storytelling company, where we figure out the best platform. We think Netflix is the perfect place for this film.”

Meanwhile, Evans previously revealed on The Hollywood Reporter’s "Awards Chatter" podcast that he lost his best audition to Gosling.

"You know which one was a close one? 'Fracture.' Remember 'Fracture' with Ryan Gosling? I honestly have never had a better audition in my life," Evans said.

"And to lose that one… obviously, Ryan, if you’re going to lose to someone, lose to Ryan. But it was just one of those things where you think, 'Man, this is tough,'" he added.
