Conor McGregor resumed his war of words with Max Holloway just one day after confirming that he is in negotiations over a return to the octagon in July. The Irishman taunted Holloway on Twitter during his appearance at a National Hockey League (NHL) game and the response from the former all but ended the taunting in one swift blow.

The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion last appeared in the octagon against Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2018, when he lost via submission. He revealed during an interview in Chicago on Saturday he was likely to return in the next couple of months.

“Yes, we’re currently in negotiations, we’re aiming for July, we’ll see what happens,” McGregor said during an interview to ABC Chicago. “I am staying ready. This morning I was doing incline sprints on the treadmill on my program, the McGregorFast program, today in a hotel room. So we’re staying on it, getting work in as we go.”

McGregor was in Boston for a hockey game Sunday when the Boston Bruins beat the Colombus Blue Jackets 2-1 in overtime at TD Garden. He recalled a fight at the same venue when he beat Holloway via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 26 in 2013.

The Irishman is not one to back down from gloating about his past victories and he was not about to stop this time. He tweeted referring to TD Garden as “McGregor’s Garden” with images of his victory over the current UFC featherweight champion; McGregor was 25 years old at the time, while the Hawaii-born Holloway was 21 years old.

The 27-year-old, who is currently ranked no.4 in official UFC pound-for-pound rankings, was not one to hold back, and replied with a flurry of tweets mocking McGregor. The mocking was brutal with him even linking the page that showed the Irishman’s 38-second loss to Joe Duffy when he was 21 years old.

It continued when Holloway said he would also beat his 21-year-old self but admitted that it would not cost him his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) which McGregor tore during his win over the now 27-year-old UFC featherweight champion.

McGregor is certainly not one to back down from a verbal battle and he was quick to respond with a foul-mouthed rant that included asking Holloway if he has the ACL with him, while he concluded his tweet with a "Happy Paddy's Day" message.
