A cellphone store employee is fighting for his life after being "accidentally" struck by a bullet coming from a cop's firearm callously placed on the display counter.

The incident which took place in Amritsar in the Indian state of Punjab on Wednesday was caught on camera. Surveillance footage from the store shows the cop taking out his service revolver from his pocket and putting it on the counter, Zee News reported.

He then chitchats with the store employees, fiddling with his gun all the while. Just as he places it back on the counter, a man next to him picks it up and accidentally fires the trigger, striking an employee whose face can't be seen in the clip.

The footage then shows a tense situation unfolding at the shop as other customers scramble to the spot in disbelief. The employee was rushed to a hospital.

Varinder Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) North, Amritsar, told Zee News that the injured person remained in a serious condition as of Thursday. "Necessary action will be taken as per the statements of the eyewitnesses and the family. The condition of the injured person is serious," he said.

The accused police official was suspended by his department on Wednesday, according to Hindusthan Times. The video has gained traction among social media users who demanded immediate action against the "unwarranted display" of the gun inside the store.

In June 2018, an off-duty police officer's gun accidentally went off when he was dancing at a Denver nightclub, hitting and injuring a fellow clubgoer. During his dance routine, he pulled off a backflip at which point his gun came loose from his waistband's holster. As he scrambled to get the gun, a round went off and struck another man in the leg. The injured man was taken to a hospital and was said to be in good condition. The Denver Police Homicide Unit was investigating the incident and trying to ascertain if the cop violated the police code of conduct, including having alcohol, applicable for the times an official is carrying a gun.
