The U.S. is seeing a rise in COVID-19 infections, but new White House COVID-19 response coordinator Dr. Ashish K. Jha has told media outlets that the numbers are not troubling.

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Dr. Jha said that Omicron subvariants are “incredibly contagious” and “causing a little bump of cases here in the United States.” He said on NBC's “Today,” that he doesn't believe “this is a moment where we have to be excessively concerned.”

“Right now that is showing an uptick, but not showing substantial changes in what we should be doing,” Dr. Jha said on CNN. “And I think the CDC policy is right on this.”

According to the New York Times, New York City and Washington, D.C., are notable areas in the country experiencing an increase in infections.

Reuters reports that the World Health Organization has begun reviewing many cases of new sub-variants of Omicron to determine if they are more contagious or lethal.

The United Nations agency said Monday that it will begin observing BA.4 and BA.5, relatives of the initial Omicron strain.
