A Manchester United youngster could be on his way to surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney’s goal records with the Red Devils.

During their time with Machester United, Ronaldo and Rooney were one of the most sensational duos in English football. Ever since they set foot on the pitch, the pair already displayed impressive goal scoring skills. However, an 18-year-old Man Utd youngster named Mason Greenwood is now presenting a strong case to surpass their remarkable tallies.

According to Machester Evening News, Greenwood, who is only on his first season with the Red Devils, is closing in on Rooney’s goal tally in his first full season with United. Even more notable, the Englishman already has scored 14 goals this season alone, surpassing Ronaldo, who only scored double digits until his third season with the club.

Greenwood's 14 goals happened in 45 United appearances. And pundits believe that prior to the lockdown going into place, it was very realistically expected that the teenager could target the staunch 20-goal tally before the season ended.

The legendary forward Rooney, scored 17 times in his maiden United season. He ended up with a record of 19 in 2004-05, a stat which Greenwood could possibly equal as soon as the lockdown is lifted in English football. In fact, Greenwood successfully netted his 18th roughly six months ago.

As for Ronaldo, Greenwood already exceeded the Portuguese icon's first two seasons with the club as he did not reach double figures for United until his third campaign and tallied a total of 12 goals.

Greenwood captured the attention of fans and pundits because it’s not everyday that they see players score goals with both feet. Only few strikers are truly two-footed and this is why there was such a buzz about Greenwood prior to his pre-season tour squad debut as a 16-year-old under Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United legend Clayton Blackmore once said that Greenwood was “the first person he had seen that takes penalties and the free-kicks with his wrong foot.” Blackmore’s comment was from years ago, but Greenwood proved everybody right as he was naturally a left-footed but his first United goal against Astana was an incredible right-footer from open play.

Though the said goal was Greenwood’s only right-footer, he has an impressive 100 percent record from 12 yards in regulation time and shootouts.

Greenwood is also currently at a far more advanced level than Tammy Abraham and Tottenham striker Harry Kane were when they were 18.
