Dak Prescott has agreed to a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys, making history in the process. The four-year deal includes record-setting guaranteed money and the largest one-year salary for any NFL player ever.

Prescott’s contract is worth $160 million, $126 million of which is guaranteed, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. With a $66 million signing bonus, according to Schefter, Prescott will be paid a record $75 million in 2021.

Russell Wilson owned the previous record with a $65 million signing bonus.

Dallas owes Prescott an average of $42 million per season over the first three years of the deal, which expires after the 2024 season. Prescott has a no-trade clause and will be eligible for free agency when he’s 31 years old.

Prescott’s salary cap number for the 2021 NFL season will be $22.2 million. The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback made $31.4 million last season on the franchise tag. Prescott has earned $36.3 million in salary over his first five seasons.

The deal comes just five months after Prescott’s 2020 campaign was cut short in Week 5 because of a fractured and dislocated ankle.

Patrick Mahomes still owns the highest average yearly salary with $45 million per season. The Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback inked a $503 million extension last year that keeps him under contract through the 2031 season.

Mahomes is widely considered to be the NFL’s best quarterback. Prescott hasn’t experienced the same level of success, though he’s been among the league’s best starters since being drafted in 2016.

Before getting hurt last season, Prescott was on a record-setting pace for passing yards in a season. Prescott’s career 97.3 passer rating is tied with Tom Brady for the seventh-best all-time.

With a 42-27 record as a starter, Prescott has never finished below .500 in a full NFL season. The Cowboys went 4-7 in Prescott’s absence last season.
