An experienced hiker, Daniel Komins, who had gone missing in the Trinity Alps in Northern California was found dead Sunday morning following a five-day search.

The 34-year-old, emergency medical technician’s backpack was located by a California Highway Patrol helicopter off-trail between L Lake and Mirror Lake. Soon after his body was recovered by the search and rescue team members, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

His remains were flown from the area by helicopter. An autopsy will be performed, however, no foul play is suspected.

"A preliminary investigation appears to indicate that Komins may have fallen in the steep and rocky terrain," the Trinity County Sheriff's office said in a statement.

Komins’ unoccupied vehicle was found on Thursday. Other backpackers in the mountains said they last saw him on Aug. 11.

Komins had embarked on a five-day solo hike on Aug. 10 near the Canyon Creek trail system. He carried a cell phone and Global Positioning System (GPS) tracker with him and had contacted his girlfriend on Aug. 11 and told her the trip was going as planned.

Komins, who was also a volunteer with Blue Lake Fire was reported missing by his girlfriend when he failed to return home as planned on Aug. 14.

Authorities then organized a 40-person ground search for him last week, according to the ABC News.

The organizations involved in Komins’ search, included the California Highway Patrol, California National Guard, U.S. Forest Service and Civil Air Patrol together with search and rescue teams from five area counties.
