Their relationship has mostly been going well with only some slight hiccups in regards to when they actually plan to marry. Now though, a new situation could threaten to tear Hope and Rafe apart for good on the Thursday, Sept. 21 episode of "Days of Our Lives."

They've been engaged for a little while on the NBC soap, and haven't made any significant wedding plans just yet. Focused on both Deimos' (Vincent Irizarry) murder and the attempt to take Raines (Aaron Spears) in for being Dario's (Jordi Villasousa) silent partner in a counterfeiting scheme, Hope (Kristian Alfonso) and Rafe (Galen Gering) haven't had the time to think about their wedding. However, now that their caseload has gotten to be less, Rafe suggested they pick a wedding date, but Hope turned the idea down.

Since then they also ran into tension when they were asked about potential wedding plans, and Rafe deflected the question to his fiancée. It led to a small argument between them afterwards, and they seemed to be okay afterwards. However, a new situation has since cropped up.

Now that Abe (James Reynolds) has been freed some jail since Raines was brought in on the sting, he has been trying to find a new police commissioner. He had hoped to persuade Roman (Josh Charles), but he had turned the job down and suggested both Hope and Rafe as candidates for the position. Now, the engaged couple is finding themselves both in line for a lucrative job that only one of them can get.

This could lead to a big problem for them in the short term, as both may believe they have earned the job, but will need to potentially hurt their significant other's chances in order to get it for themselves. The competition could become intense as they each vie for the job, and even after that part ends, one of them will officially be superior to the other at work, which could not only be hard for them to deal with, but it could also be considered a problem for the other one if they want to keep their job.

Meanwhile, someone else in Salem who is dealing with work issues now is Eli (Lamon Archey), who learned the FBI was firing him after the sting to get Raines. When he had taken Gabi (Camila Banus) hostage, Eli shot at him while he was holding her, taking a risky move in the process. Though he successfully took Raines down, the move was deemed too irresponsible, and he has now lost his job because of it.

However, when Gabi gets wind of the reason why he lost his job, she will feel guilty, because he was only trying to save her. Now, hopeful that she may be able to help them, she may try to make a call to his bosses, insisting the only danger she was in was with Raines and not Eli. While her attempt may not be successful on behalf of getting his job back, the gesture could be a good one in terms of them possible rekindling their former romantic connection.

"Days of Our Lives" airs weekdays on NBC.
