The remains of a 15-month-old baby girl were found inside a plastic container in a home in South Korea.

The parents, who kept the baby's death a secret for about three years, were arrested after the remains were found in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province.

It is believed the deceased baby's 34-year-old mother left her to die in the couple's house while the father, 29, was in jail, the Korea Herald reported Wednesday.

When the father was released from prison, he took the child's remains and stored them in his parents' house. The remains were kept inside a plastic container that is generally used to store kimchi, a Korean dish made of fermented vegetables.

The container was hidden away on the rooftop of the house.

The baby girl's death only came to light about three years later when Pocheon city officials reported her missing. They found that the child had not been enrolled in any preschool and had not been appearing for checkups.

After several attempts to contact the mother failed, Pocheon officials filed a police report on Oct. 27. The mother was booked on Oct. 30 on suspicions of violating laws related to child welfare.

While speaking to investigators, the mother initially denied the fact that her daughter was dead. She claimed she abandoned her in the street.

The mother eventually admitted that she and her husband had been hiding their baby girl's body. Officials then found the child's remains inside the plastic container, the outlet reported.

The father was booked on Nov. 16 in connection with the incident, according to the Straits Times.

Officials are still trying to determine the circumstances that led to the child's death and the subsequent events.

Results of an autopsy are awaited to reveal the baby's exact cause of death.

An unrelated incident was reported in September after a newborn baby was found wrapped in a plastic bag outside a home in South Africa. A family in the Ga-Mashabela village in Masemola informed the police after they opened their front door to find the plastic bag with the infant inside. Preliminary investigation revealed that the newborn was strangled to death before her body was put inside the bag.
