  • A man in India jumped from the third floor of an apartment complex Thursday
  • He was delivering a parcel when the recipient's German shepherd rushed at him
  • The man suffered serious injuries and succumbed to them at a hospital Saturday

A 23-year-old man in India's southern Telangana state died after he jumped off a building to escape a dog, according to reports.

Mohammed Rizwan was delivering a food parcel to a home at an apartment complex in Hyderabad's Banjara Hills when the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. Thursday, the Times of India reported.

A family member of recipient K. Shobhana opened the door when Rizwan knocked. But a German shepherd rushed out and caused the deliveryman to panic, Banjara Hills inspector M. Narender told the outlet.

Rizwan ran and jumped from the third floor of the building as he feared the dog would bite him.

He suffered serious injuries as a result of the fall and succumbed to them at a hospital Saturday night.

Police initially registered a case under Sections 289 (negligent conduct with respect to an animal) and 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code against Shobhana, the dog's owner.

A negligence-causing death charge was added following Rizwan's death.

Shobhana will not be arrested since the punishment for the charges invoked against her sought less than seven years of jail time, officials said.

"She will shortly be served notice to appear for further investigation," Narender said.

Similar incidents happened earlier this month when two women in India's Uttar Pradesh state died while trying to flee from monkeys.

One of the women, a 35-year-old resident of the district of Firozabad named Renu Gupta, was killed after she accidentally fell from the terrace of her house.

Gupta, who attempted to flee from a group of monkeys, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital, police said on Jan. 5. She is survived by her 8-year-old twins.

Another woman from Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district, Ramshree Devi, also died after she was chased by monkeys.

The 83-year-old was basking in the sun when she was attacked by a group of animals, which resulted in her falling while trying to escape.

Devi fractured both of her legs as well as her right hand. She died while being treated at a hospital as well.
