Rapper DMX, real name Earl Simmons, is hospitalized in White Plains, New York in a critical care unit following an overdose that triggered a heart attack at his home on Friday night.

According to TMZ, the prognosis for the rapper, best known for songs like “What’s My Name” and “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem,” as well as his role in films like “Cradle 2 The Grave,” is not good, with sources telling the website that while he has “some brain activity,” he’s in a “vegetative state” and doctors have cautioned he may not survive.

The rapper has battled substance abuse issues for several years and checked into rehab more than once, though his latest stint in 2019 was reportedly not due to actually relapsing, but fears he might.

Fans of the rapper quickly took to social media to express heartache over the news and send wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the 50-year-old.

Substance abuse issues weren’t the only things to have plagued Simmons over the years, as he also has been arrested several times, including for resisting arrest, reckless and unlicensed driving, drug possession and tax evasion.

The father of 15 filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2013 after he reportedly owed $1-$10 million in debt, which included $1,24 million in child support and $21,000 on an auto lease. At the time, he listed only $50,000 in assets. In 2015, he was sentenced to six months in jail for failing to pay nearly $40,000 in child support.

He was then charged in 2017 with 14 counts of tax fraud totaling $1.7 million in unpaid taxes and penalties from income earned between 2002-2005, as well as failing to file returns from 2010-2015 despite earning $2.3 million in that time period. He pleaded guilty to one count and was sentenced to one year of prison with three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $2,28 million in restitution. He was released in January 2019.

The rapper also was found unresponsive in a hotel parking lot in Yonkers, New York in 2016, or an alleged asthma attack. The rapper was administered Narcan at the time, though no illegal substances were found in that incident.

With all of his legal troubles, the once prolific rapper now stands with an estimated net worth of -$1 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
