The doctors at a hospital in India removed 30 deformed teeth from the mouth of a 10-year-old boy, who was suffering from a rare and complex condition.

The procedure took place in Indore city in the state of Madhya Pradesh. According to local media reports, the boy complained of chronic swelling and pain in the teeth. An examination revealed he had 50 teeth in his mouth due to a condition called odontoma.

"Just one or two such cases are found in a population of one lakh (100,000). The problem can become complex if not addressed on time. A three-member team removed 30 teeth of the boy in a surgery carried out over two-and-half hours. He will regain 30 teeth by the age of 18," Sachin Thakur of private Modern Dental College and Research Centre said, according to Deccan Herald.

According to reports, the operation was very difficult and it took two and a half hours to complete it. It was not clear when the operation took place.

Thakur said following the surgery, the child was discharged from the hospital, according to Web Duniya [Google Translate showed].

According to Science Direct, odontoma is a benign tumor originating from an alteration of differentiated mesenchymal and epithelial odontogenic cells. This tumor has the capacity of forming enamel, dentin and cement.

While the exact cause is unknown, this rare tumor could have been caused due to deformity in the process of formation of jaws and teeth because of genetic reasons or an injury to the jaw.

In a similar incident last year, a teenager in the northern state of Bihar had to undergo a three-hour operation to remove extra 82 teeth from his mouth. The rare tumor of the jaw caused an unwanted growth of extra teeth in the mouth of the 17-year-old, local media reports said at the time. The teenager was suffering from the condition for the past five years. His condition deteriorated because of lack of treatment, local media reported.

There have been a few more similar instances. In 2019, a team of doctors from the southern Indian city of Chennai performed a surgery to remove 527 teeth from the mouth of a 7-year-old boy.
