Saturday marks the 87th birth anniversary of American singer Elvis Presley, who is considered one of the most significant cultural icons of the past century.

Widely known as the "King of Rock and Roll," Presley was born in Mississippi in 1935. He began his singing career with the Sun Records label. His recording contract was sold to RCA Victor in 1955 and by the end of the decade, he was an international sensation. Some of his iconic songs include "Heartbreak Hotel," "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Hound Dog." He was found dead on Aug. 16, 1977, at his home in Memphis.
